Film Processing
Nowadays, you don’t need to have a dark room and wait for days just to process your photos. All you need to do is simply run it through a machine, wait for an hour and your photos are done.
Film processing involves exposure to different kinds of chemical solutions for controlled time periods. It basically involves the following steps namely development; stopping of the development; fixing, washing and drying. Each step involved should be properly executed in order to develop the image properly.
You can rely on discount film processing to do a great job for most of 35mm film processing. There are many technicians that have adequate training and know-how of producing a standard 35mm film format into fine, quality prints with a one-hour photo-processing machine. However, for your other specialty processing needs, you may need to take your film to a professional processing center. Many discount and one-hour photo processing centers, for instance, cannot unload film from a disposable camera for processing. More often than not, this type of film would have to be taken to a Fuji or Kodak film-processing center, depending on the store contract, in which trained technicians would carefully unload the film from the camera and have it processed appropriately.
When printing your digital photos, it is important to make sure that your photo-processing center should be capable of properly transferring your digital prints into photo paper. There are many photo developing outlets that have machines wherein you can conveniently print out the photos by yourself straight from a CD.
There may be other cases in which a discount center may not be able to address your needs for, say, 3D film processing or slide film processing. More often than not, you will still have to take 3D or slide film to a professional photography center or any specialty camera outlet to have them developed. Moreover, most hospitals and medical offices do not usually rely on one-hour photo-processing services for their functions. For instance, most medical operations rely on manual x-ray film processing, which means that a trained technician should be available to process these images for medical professionals.
In manual X-ray processing, application and chemicals used are just the same as with an automatic film processor. Processing is two-fold: to produce enough radiographs for viewing and prepare it for storage. Usually, radiographs are stored for a period of, or more than 20 years.
Chemical temperature and the time for the film to be in contact with the chemical are the two topmost factors in manual X-ray processing. The higher the temperature of the chemical, the less time required. Ideally, the time and temperature for manual X-ray processing is 4 ½ to 5 minutes at 68F degrees.
If you are one of those who prefer to get specialty prints than standard processing prints, it is important that you know the right locations to get print quality that you deserve. You may want to read online or offline film processing reviews. These can well guide you and help you come up with your own decision based on opinions from other photographers about the different kinds of locations and outfits they may have used previously for their various special needs. However, if you wish to do away with specialty prints and be better off with standard processing prints, then you may just have to stick to your local one-hour photo-processing outlet.
